Power to Decide Applauds Introduction of the Right to Contraception Act

February 5, 2025

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Today, Representatives Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX), Angie Craig (D-MN), Nikema Williams (D-GA) and Sara Jacobs (D-CA) and Senators Ed Markey (D-MA), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Mazie Hirono (D-HI) introduced the Right to Contraception Act. The bill affirms that providers have a right to provide and people have a right to receive contraception. The right to contraception was first recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court more than half a century ago in Griswold v. Connecticut but faces new and growing threats today.

In response, Power to Decide CEO and practicing OB-GYN, Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley, released the following statement:

“As an OB-GYN, I’ve seen firsthand that the right to birth control is essential for the well-being of my patients, their families and their communities. For nearly six decades, birth control has allowed millions of people to manage health conditions, plan if and when to have children and achieve their career and educational aspirations.

“Not surprisingly, birth control is incredibly popular. The policymakers attacking it are spreading misinformation and disinformation in order to justify their attacks. Whether it’s attempting to defund the Title X Family Planning program, cutting Medicaid or efforts to undo the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive coverage benefit – the attacks are relentless. And the harms do not fall equally. People already facing systemic barriers including people of color and people with low incomes, face ever growing difficulties in accessing the reproductive health care they need.

“If policymakers truly mean what they say regarding support for contraception, there is no clearer way to meaningfully demonstrate that support than by co-sponsoring and passing the Right to Contraception Act. It’s the first step to ensuring that birth control is protected for people everywhere. At Power to Decide, we remain committed to ensuring that everyone has access to the information and care they need to make informed decisions about their birth control journey without barriers.”
