What’s your role at Power to Decide and what brought you to our organization?
I support the communications work for a Missouri-based initiative called The Right Time. Many people in the United States experience barriers when obtaining contraception and contraception services, and The Right Time is one of Power to Decide’s programs that seeks to increase the accessibility of health services among marginalized populations. My role involves assembling communication strategies and digital outreach efforts to inform Missouri residents about the services that are available to them through The Right Time.
What fuels your passion for advancing reproductive well-being?
I have been very fortunate that I have been able to get contraception through my health insurance at a cost I can afford. This is not the case for everyone (especially those in contraceptive deserts) so it’s important to me that my work seeks to improve access for others.
In the last year, what work at Power to Decide excited you most?
We recently partnered with influencers in Missouri and asked for their help in communicating the initiative’s available services and offerings to their followers. It was a huge success – not only in terms of increasing awareness for The Right Time, but also because we got great data and learnings that we can use to run more campaigns like this in the future.
What’s a piece of behind-the-scenes work with Power to Decide that you’re proud of?
A portion of our outreach efforts involve producing educational materials that providers use in exam rooms to discuss different methods of birth control with patients. They’re a great way for patients to visualize how many birth control options they can choose from, and these tools have also helped providers demonstrate to patients that they provide unbiased information and care.
Can you name one thing outside of work that gives you joy?
Aside from two boys (who are three and almost five), I would say my drum set. I bought myself an electronic kit for my birthday last year, and even though I don’t practice as much as I should, I really do love playing them.
