POWER TO DECIDE MARKS THE 48TH ANNIVERSARY OF ROE V. WADE
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, January 22, 2021, marks the 48th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.
In response, Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley, MD, MPH, issued the following statement:
“It has been almost 50 years since the legalization of abortion care yet, due to restrictions, access to abortion care remains still out of reach for too many. In fact, in the last two years alone, 83 state policies were enacted to restrict access to abortion services. These restrictions damage people’s reproductive health and are not consistent with the spirit and breath of Roe v. Wade. Moreover for 44 years, the discriminatory Hyde Amendment has resulted in the more than 7 million women of reproductive age who rely on Medicaid coverage not having insurance coverage for abortion care. More than half of them are women of color. We must commit to making the promise of Roe v. Wade a reality for everyone.
“As a gynecologist who has included abortion care as part of my practice for nearly 17 years, I know firsthand the importance of all people having access to the full spectrum of reproductive health services, including abortion care. Such access must be available to all people regardless of who they are, where they live or their income.
“We are grateful for and encouraged by the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to comprehensive reproductive health care. We are also heartened to see the administration express their commitment to addressing disparities in maternal and infant health because it is critical that we support people throughout their reproductive lives.
“Our focus remains to ensure all people have equitable access to reproductive health care and are able to make their own decisions regarding their ability to decide if, when and under what circumstances to get pregnant and have a child. So today, we acknowledge 48 years of people having the legal right to abortion care We are ready to work with the administration to make the full spectrum of reproductive health care, including abortion care, accessible for everyone.”
