Power to Decide Applauds U.S. Supreme Court Decision on Mifepristone
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a stay in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA, blocking a lower court ruling that would have severely restricted access to mifepristone. This protects the current availability of mifepristone while legal challenges to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of the medication proceed.
Power to Decide CEO, Raegan McDonald-Mosley, MD, MPH, issued the following statement in support of Mifepristone:
“Mifepristone has been safely in use for over 20 years. In fact, it is used for the majority of abortions today and as a tool to manage miscarriages. Mifepristone is medically safe and should not be restricted by anti-abortion legal maneuvers designed to circumvent science and medical best practices.
“Every patient should be able to access the abortion care that they need by the method they prefer. Following the Dobbs decision, protecting access to abortion care is more crucial than ever. As a practicing OB-GYN, I see how restricted access to abortion care impacts my patients, especially those in communities of color and rural communities who already face barriers to reproductive health care. Moreover, clinics providing abortion are overwhelmed with patients from states without abortion access. Maintaining access to mifepristone not only protects reproductive autonomy for more people, but it ensures that providers can treat their patients according to their expert judgment, not the whims of politicians or judges.
“Power to Decide will continue to update AbortionFinder.org, a resource for people seeking abortion to ensure that all people have the power to decide whether and when to become pregnant.
“We are pleased that the Supreme Court has left drug approval to the FDA for now, and we hope the justices will continue to do so. While this decision alone does not solve the reproductive health crisis following the Dobbs decision, allowing a ban or severe restrictions on mifepristone would have only put abortion care out of reach for many more people.”
