Power to Decide Condemns Supreme Court Decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization

June 24, 2022

(Washington, DC)  Today, the Supreme Court issued a decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that ends the constitutional protections for abortion rights affirmed in Roe v. Wade and upheld in Planned Parenthood v. Casey. This decision hands this fundamental right back to the states, paving the way for roughly half the states to ban abortion access entirely.

The following can be attributed to Power to Decide CEO Raegan McDonald-Mosley, MD, MPH:

“We at Power to Decide, along with the countless millions of people across the U.S., have been bracing for this day and are nonetheless heartsick that it’s arrived. Abortion is essential, time-sensitive, life-saving care that remains as necessary as ever. And while it’s true that Roe v. Wade itself has never been enough to protect abortion rights for far too many people, its repeal represents a historic loss.

“With today’s decision, the Supreme Court has not only rolled back generations of reproductive rights, but also jeopardized the reproductive health of generations to come. It will disproportionately harm those who already lack access to the full spectrum of reproductive health services including people in historically marginalized communities, and those struggling to make ends meet.

“Thankfully, some states have already taken meaningful action to protect the rights of their residents, and to prepare for the surge of people coming from other states in search of abortion care. The need will be tremendous, and we will all have an important role to play. With our AbortionFinder.org platform and other resources, Power to Decide will continue to connect people with the information they need to access care as quickly and seamlessly as possible.

“This moment underscores the importance of our efforts to address inequities in access to abortion care, contraception and other reproductive health services. We must ensure that our strategies are intentional and meet the needs of the communities we serve. We must look to ourselves and each other to prioritize reproductive well-being for all.”
