Fathers Are Confident They Can Provide Important Advice to Their Daughters About Sex, Love, and Relationships

June 15, 2018

Washington, D.C. – According to a survey from Power to Decide, fathers feel prepared to provide their daughters with advice on sex, love, and relationships. This Father’s Day, Power to Decide calls upon all fathers to initiate these conversations by using information from the organization’s recently launched, #TalkingIsPower campaign.  The campaign provides resources that champions such as parents, teachers, neighbors and family members can use to spark conversations with young people about sex, love, relationships.

“Conversations regarding sex, love, and relationships with your children can be awkward, but they are important in order to ensure that young people have the most accurate, reliable, and resonant information to make informed decisions regarding these topics,” said Ginny Ehrlich, CEO, Power to Decide.  “These conversations are also critical to help the young people in our lives understand that they matter and that you have every confidence in their ability to realize their full potential.”

Overall, fathers considered themselves prepared to provide advice to their daughters:

  • 54% of white fathers consider themselves very prepared to give relationship advice; 59% feel very prepared to give advice on sex, pregnancy, or birth control.
  • 60% of Latino fathers consider themselves very prepared to give relationship advice; 49% feel very prepared to give advice on sex, pregnancy, or birth control.
