HIMS & HERS ANNOUNCES IT IS PARTNERING WITH POWER TO DECIDE TO EXPAND ACCESS TO BIRTH CONTROL

July 21, 2020

Today, we are proud to announce we are partnering with Power to Decide, the campaign to prevent unplanned pregnancy, and an organization that shares our values of making sure every woman has access and information to accurate, quality sexual health information and the full range of contraceptive methods.

Power to Decide is a non-profit organization that works to ensure all people—no matter who they are, where they live or what their economic status might be—have the power to decide if, when and under what circumstances to get pregnant and have a child. It’s our sincere hope that by providing this support to Power to Decide more women will be able to access birth control, especially at a time when it’s critically needed. Due to the pandemic, Power to Decide has seen an increase in the number of women of low-income seeking access to birth control. Sadly, this is surely to increase due to the recent Supreme Court ruling in favor of allowing employers not to cover contraception.

To get things started, we have donated to the organization, which will help support Power to Decide’s BCBenefits program. BCBenefits is a contraceptive access fund to help women with low incomes overcome some of the most commonly-faced barriers in accessing contraception, including unreimbursed costs of contraception and transportation.

“It’s clear the pandemic has created even more barriers for women who were already struggling to access birth control—the number of BCBenefits users from March to June increased 19%,” said Gillian Sealy, CEO of Power to Decide. “Increased unemployment, loss of health insurance and stay-at-home orders have all severely impacted access, and by partnering with Hims & Hers, we will be able to help increase access for women to obtain the birth control method that’s right for them.”
To help raise awareness for the acute need to expand access to birth control, Hims & Hers will also be matching up to $5,000 more from donations that you make by August 31, the equivalent of an entire year of birth control coverage for 100 women. If you are able, please donate here and spread the word.

“The increase of limitations in accessing contraception is cause for great concern,” said Dr. Leah Millheiser, senior vice president of Medical Affairs at Hims & Hers. “We believe that every woman in the United States should be able to obtain birth control with ease, and we are committed to providing and expanding access to it. There is great synergy between Hims & Hers and Power to Decide, and we are determined to help as many women in need by providing this support.”
