STATEMENT FROM POWER TO DECIDE ON PRELIMINARY INJUNCTION TO BLOCK THE ADMINISTRATION’S GAG RULE GOVERNING THE TITLE X FAMILY PLANNING PROGRAM

April 25, 2019

(Washington, D.C.) — Earlier this week, U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Oregon, Michael McShane, announced he will issue a preliminary injunction blocking the final rule governing the Title X Family Planning Program, also referred to as the “domestic gag rule.” The rule would require health providers at sites that receive Title X funds to withhold information about abortion as well as ban providers from referring for abortion. A preliminary injunction will also be issued to stop the "separation'' requirement, which prohibits clinics that offer high-quality affordable contraceptive services from receiving Title X funding, if they also offer abortion services.

In response, Ginny Ehrlich, CEO, Power to Decide issued the following statement:

“We are pleased that the District Court is doing its part to protect women’s access to high-quality reproductive health care by announcing a preliminary injunction that blocks the Administration’s effort to politicize women’s access to quality health care. The health centers that receive Title X family planning funds serve a critical role in keeping women healthy by providing high-quality reproductive health care, including contraception, STI screenings, Pap tests and cancer screenings. Access to these services should be protected and expanded for all. A real win for medical providers and their patients will only be realized when all women regardless of who they are or where they live have the power to decide if, when and under what circumstances to get pregnant and have a child.”
