I don’t know about you, but during quarantine I’ve had some time to think. I’ve had time to reminisce about the good times of yore and to imagine what the future holds: for myself, my family, and the world around us. I’ve noticed a shift in my perspective and wondered why I’ve placed some of the limitations on my thoughts and myself that I have. After a year, plus, of restrictions due to the public health emergency and revisiting the racial inequities that have never been fully addressed in our country—many are ready to (re)imagine our futures and all that is possible.

And young people are at the forefront. They are re-envisioning a future that has fewer barriers and is more equitable to everyone. One of the latest examples is Advocates for Youth Free the Pill Virtual Store that will open on Monday, May 10, 2021 (RSVP for the virtual store ribbon-cutting ceremony).

Dreamt up by members of the #FreeThePill youth council, the interactive store invites visitors into a world where birth control is available over the counter, covered by insurance, with no age restrictions.

We know that barriers to birth control fall harder on Black, Indigenous, Asian American and Pacific Islanders, and Latinx people, as well as for young people, immigrants, LGBTQ+ folks, and those working to make ends meet. Visit the store to learn about the barriers to access, earn merchandise, view #FreeThePill art from artists such as Mona Chalabi, and take action to #FreethePill for ALL who need it.

The opening of the #FreethePill Virtual Store is part of several virtual festivities celebrating the annual Free the Pill Day on Sunday, May 9. Starting today, you can also:

  • Tune in for a livestream at 12pm ET on Friday, May 7, on Free the Pill's Twitter and Facebook channels.
  • Participate in a GIF storm on Twitter at 2pm ET on Friday, May 7, to show your support for OTC birth control pills.
  • Post on your social media channels on Friday, May 7, using #FreeThePill to raise visibility for Free the Pill Day.
  • Follow Free the Pill on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to hear more about the campaign and participate in the week’s activities.

We hope you’ll join us at the Free the Pill Virtual Store opening on Monday, May 10. Don’t forget to tell your friends and RSVP.
